Trail Overview

La carrera de la bobina del desierto, or the Desert Coil Run, kicks off north of the "San Felipe" trail, quickly plunging into a winding, sandy path carved through the open desert. This section is lively and challenging, with numerous whoops left behind by the recent Baja 250 race (VCP 35 to 40), making for a bumpy but exhilarating ride. About halfway through, the train sharply turns eastward, steering you toward the coast. The landscape opens into a flat desert plain where the whoops ease off, but deep, carved-out ruts demand attention. High clearance is necessary here -- vehicles should be equipped with at least 33-inch tires and a solid lift to navigate without getting stuck. As you continue, the trail winds through a beautiful desert forest filled with tall Ocotillos, dense Creosote bushes, and towering cacti, painting a classic Baja scene. The run concludes just shy of Highway 5 at the ruins of an old mining area -- a great spot to take a break, explore a bit, and soak in the rugged desert history.

Difficulty

The first section's sandy whoops require careful throttle control and suspension that can handle rapid dips. The second half demands high ground clearance and off-road driving skill to manage deep ruts without bottoming out. This trail is best suited for well-equipped high clearance 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers.
