Trail Overview

This 12-mile loop offers nearly every surface imaginable in a desert landscape, making for a dynamic off-road experience. Starting from the east entrance and heading north, the trail begins with rugged terrain, mixing loose and embedded rocks. Although there are brief smoother stretches, rocky sections dominate the first few miles. The trail then crosses a vast, mile-wide arroyo, broken into smaller channels with two-foot drops and stretches of deep sand. One arroyo spans over 50 meters and may pose challenges depending on your preparedness and sand-driving skills. As you navigate this route, you'll encounter everything from well-worn tracks to faint paths nearly hidden by the terrain. The third quarter, mostly traveled by motorcycles, can be harder to follow but leads back to a well-defined SCORE race section with deep ruts. In particularly rough spots, veering left onto a parallel track usually offers a smoother alternative. Upon reaching the main road, you'll find a couple of interesting structures including a well.

Difficulty

While this route features a variety of terrain, it's higher difficulty rating primarily stems from deep sand in several long arroyo sections, one of which extends over 50 yards with notably challenging sand depth. Depending on the weather, temperature, and sand conditions, these stretches can be difficult to cross. With experience in sand driving, properly aired-down tires, and an extra vehicle for recovery if possible, most drivers should be able to navigate these areas successfully. For solo travelers, having a winch and traction boards is strongly recommended.
