Trail Overview
Starting just off Highway 1, this trail begins as a pleasant drive through the open desert, with only light sand to navigate on the surface. A few miles in, however, the terrain becomes more demanding, with a mix of surfaces ranging from deep sand to baseball-sized rocks and smaller gravel. Several steep, rocky climbs require careful navigation over loose surfaces, and deep sand in some of the larger arroyos adds to the challenge. One particularly impressive arroyo spans nearly a mile across, dividing into smaller sandy channels that test both skill and preparation. Tire pressure adjustments are essential here, and vehicles should be well-prepared for varied conditions. As you near the end of the route, you'll tackle a final ascent, revealing a stunning view of the secluded backside of the historic El Marmol onyx mine. This trail descends to the mine's rear, fenced off from the main road. Be cautious on this approach, as recent modifications, including a dirt mound at the trail's end, may limit access for larger vehicles. While some motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides manage to navigate this barrier, future changes could further restrict passage, so be mindful when planning your route.

Difficulty
Expect several steep descents into arroyo sections, where you'll encounter deep sand crossings and challenging rocky climbs. Proper preparation is essential--airing down tires will improve traction, and traveling with a second vehicle is advisable in case recovery is needed. With a variety of rock types scattered along the trail, carrying good spare tires and a tire repair kit is highly recommended.
History
El Marmol's deposits were prized for their superior quality and larger sizes. At its peak, El Marmol held the title of the largest onyx quarry in the world.
