Trail Overview
This off-road route traverses expansive salt flats that can present significant challenges depending on conditions. During high tides or after storms, standing water often covers sections of the flats, and even in the driest seasons, seemingly firm areas can give way unexpectedly, creating hazards for travelers. Mapped during the driest time of the year, this trail posed difficulties even for a lightweight motorcycle, with parts sinking up to six inches. Although faint tracks from full-sized vehicles were visible, the trail is rated primarily for motorcycles, quads, and side-by-sides, as heavier vehicles risk becoming severely stuck year-round. For those attempting the route in a full-sized 4WD vehicle, extreme caution is essential: air down your tires significantly, travel with recovery gear, and ensure you have support. The route was carefully chosen to stay close to higher, sandy areas, allowing for easier escape if needed. Observing cow tracks can help gauge terrain conditions--tracks that turn back indicate unstable ground ahead. Driving with air-down tires at a steady speed may help avoid sinking, but stopping or slowing abruptly can trap your vehicle. Toward the southeast end of the route, signs of deeper vehicle ruts prompted a detour back to the main road, offering a safer exit. While the route offers a smooth and scenic ride, always keep in mind that the main road is never more than a mile away, making it possible to retreat if conditions deteriorate, provided you have the experience and equipment to handle such challenges.

Difficulty
Exercise extreme caution when tackling this route, as it traverses a remote and unpredictable salt flat. On some days, it may offer a smooth, high-speed ride for miles, while on others, the terrain can quickly turn treacherous, with vehicles repeatedly sinking into unstable ground. Even when the surface appears dry, hidden hazards persist, and wet conditions almost guarantee difficulties. Equip yourself with the proper recovery tools, monitor your tracks frequently, and remain prepared to turn back if conditions worsen. Avoid venturing too far without a clear exit strategy--this landscape can change drastically, turning a quick ride into a challenging ordeal.
