Trail Overview

Approaching from the north, Low Route Salt Flats begins with a notoriously unstable salt flat crossing about a quarter mile in, a section that demands caution, especially for heavier vehicles. While this path is popular due to its flat, direct access to several fishing camps, the initial crossing poses real risks. Deep scars along the edges of the trail mark the spots where vehicles have strayed just slightly off course and become hopelessly buried. Although any vehicle can technically make the journey, 4WD is strongly recommended for this stretch. In dry conditions, it can be a quick and uneventful passage, but a single misstep can leave you axle-deep in mud with limited options for self-recovery. This trail was mapped in dry weather; recent storms or high tides can dramatically worsen conditions. If there's any doubt--especially if you're solo, in a 2WD vehicle, or lacking recovery gear--take one of the two higher, safer bypass routes.

Difficulty

While this trail isn't particularly difficult overall, it does include a section of wet salt and soft terrain that must be crossed with caution. Even in dry conditions, 4WD and basic recovery gear are highly recommended, as the slower, low-lying route has proven tricky for many travelers. Deep ruts and axle-deep scars show where vehicles have slipped off track and become stuck. If there's any uncertainty about recent weather, tides, or your vehicle's capability, consider taking one of the safer high-ground alternate routes.
