Trail Overview

This off-road route branches off from the El Faro trail, skirting the plateau before reconnecting with the coastal route. Since the gate near the end of El Faro is often locked, this may be the only accessible detour. While a high-clearance 2WD vehicle might navigate the terrain--marked by soft sand and occasional whoops--a 4WD is strongly recommended to prevent getting stuck. The route begins on a well-maintained, relatively smooth road, passing an abandoned structure on the left after a marked right turn. At the next intersection, travelers can either head right toward Highway 1 or continue straight to rejoin the coast. A more challenging left turn half a mile beyond this junction leads to the coastal route and several breathtaking oceanfront cliffside campsites. The trail then stretches straight through high desert flora, with a lone campsite about two-thirds of the way before the surface becomes slightly rougher. As the route nears its end, an old ranch comes into view just before it merges with the second half of the Coastal Route, where conditions improve for 2WD vehicles, though 4WD is still advised.

Difficulty

While an experienced driver with a high-clearance 2WD may navigate this route in dry conditions, 4WD is strongly recommended. With 4WD and the ability to air down, the terrain becomes much more manageable, making for an easier and more enjoyable drive.
