Trail Overview
Illinois (FS 5731) branches off the North Fork Snoqualmie corridor and quickly narrows into a classic, unmaintained Cascade backroad. The surface is mostly compact dirt with embedded rock, loose gravel, and the occasional rut or washout. As you climb, the road winds through dense second-growth and pockets of older timber, gradually opening to filtered views down into the North Fork valley. Higher up, short clearings offer glimpses of the surrounding ridgelines and the river far below, making it a rewarding climb for such a short spur. Like many roads in this area, maintenance is minimal, and downed trees are common, adding to the sense of exploration. This area is ideal for a full day of exploring. Side roads and pullouts provide access to dispersed camping throughout the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, where camping is generally allowed outside developed sites if you follow Leave No Trace practices. Nearby spurs and the main North Fork road lead to waterfall hikes along Illinois Creek and beyond, along with quiet river access and informal target shooting spots commonly used in the valley. The trail currently ends at a large downed cedar roughly 3 feet in diameter, but with clearing, the route could potentially be extended farther along the ridge in the future, making this a fun, evolving line to keep an eye on.
