Trail Overview

Old Liverpool Road is a largely abandoned road that runs from Albany Cross to Round Lake. The northern section, running from Albany Cross to Halfway Road, is wide and hard-packed dirt. After crossing McGill Lake, the road narrows to a single lane. Maintenance is being carried out on a large section between McGill Lake and Halfway Road, making it quite rough due to excavator work. The road smooths out back to a single lane after this newly maintained section turns east towards Lake Pleasant. About 13 km in, there is a bridge; caution is advised when crossing, as this is an unmaintained road. After 17 km from the north end, a T intersection is reached where Old Liverpool Road continues to the right (west). From here until the end at Round Lake, the road is quite deteriorated with large exposed rock sections, water holes, and areas narrowed by large brush. Pin stripping is guaranteed. Full-width vehicles can access this section, but heavy scratches are inevitable. When crossing water bodies with off-highway vehicles (OHVs) in Nova Scotia, it is important to follow the regulations set by the province. Section 12A of the Off-Highway Vehicles Act specifies that OHV operators must avoid wetlands, swamps, marshes, watercourses, sand dunes, coastal or highland barrens. Unauthorized water crossings can lead to fines and other penalties.

Difficulty

North half is not bad with only a few water holes to navigate. Trail deteriorates south of Halfway Road. Large water holes, exposed rock sections, narrow brush.

History

The south end of this road was formerly known as Nictaux Road in Queens County. After crossing north into Annapolis County, the name changed to Liverpool Nictaux Road. This road stretched from North Brookfield to Nictaux. McGill Lake, where the road appears to be built across the lake, only became like this after Nova Scotia Power constructed dams in the Nictaux River system for power generation.
