Trail Overview
The trail begins on a gravel road with washouts, requiring careful tire placement right from the start. As you progress, you'll encounter multiple water holes, some of which can be quite deep--especially after rain. The trail narrows considerably in areas, with tight tree lines, particularly during the growing season. It was cleared back for snowmobile use this past winter, but brush can grow in quickly, making the route feel more closed-in as the season advances. Larger rocks are present along the hill section, adding a technical challenge and requiring high clearance. Near the castle, the terrain transitions into sandy sections, which can become soft depending on moisture levels.

Difficulty
The trail is one vehicle wide. The main road in has bad washouts, but you can work around them easily. Water holes are under a foot deep and mostly have hard bottoms. The trail can get tight when the trees grow back in. There are loose rocks as you get closer to the castle, with sandy patches around the castle itself.
History
Johnson Lake Castle, located near Warwick mountain, Nova Scotia, is the ambitious creation of Ed Kent, an Idaho native. Inspired by an article on slipforming--a technique of building stone walls by pouring concrete into a form that is gradually raised--Ed embarked on constructing his dream stone cottage on his family's property near Johnson Lake. Over approximately ten years, he single-handedly built the two-story structure, often mixing concrete by hand and pouring it inch by inch.
