Trail Overview

This trail offers a scenic loop from the Grasmere Staging #1 Area, connecting to the trail that leads to the north side of Loon Lake and its campground. The Grasmere Staging #1Area itself offers no restroom services, but services are available once you reach Loon Lake. The trail is relatively easy, with a few bumpy sections and two easy hill climbs and descents. Overall, this is a beautiful drive through meadows and trees, with abundant wildlife and cows to observe. In season, you'll find lots of wildflowers and great views of the surrounding mountains. There is no Verizon cell service in this area; download your offline maps before you go. Dispersed camping is not permitted; camping is only allowed in designated Crown Land Camping areas or campgrounds. Crown Land Camping: Canadian Crown land is open to Canadian residents for free camping. Out-of-country visitors, particularly from the US, will need to obtain a camping permit from the nearest FrontCounter BC office in Cranbrook before camping on Crown land if camping outside of the paid campsite.

Difficulty

The trail is narrow in sections, with limited spots for oncoming traffic to pass. Be prepared for two easy hill climbs and descents. Mudholes may be present during the wet season.

History

This route is situated within the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area. The KRMA was established to manage and enhance recreational opportunities in the Lake Koocanusa area while protecting natural resources. The KRMA encompasses a large area of Crown land and offers a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and off-roading.

Access Description

Turn off Highway 93 at Dorr Cut-off Road, and the Staging area is on the left-hand side. The Grasmere Staging Area serves as a convenient access point to the trail system in the area. It provides parking and a place to stage your vehicle before heading out on the trails.
