Trail Overview

Gordon River Road South is a scenic backcountry service road that begins with a mix of pavement, gravel, and frequent potholes. As you progress, the pavement disappears and the road becomes almost entirely gravel, with an increasing number of deep potholes - airing down your tires is highly recommended to improve ride comfort and vehicle control. The trail weaves through dense forest, with trees, brush, and bushes lining both sides. Although generally wide enough for two-way traffic, several sections narrow considerably, so use caution when encountering oncoming vehicles, especially in tight areas. You will catch occasional glimpses of dramatic canyons below as the trail hugs the hillsides. Small bridges span seasonal creeks and gullies, adding variety and interest to the route. Keep an eye on the cliffs above, especially after heavy rain; minor mudslides have occurred in the past, and one known sinkhole adds to the need for caution. The trail improves slightly as you travel north -- the road widens and potholes become less frequent in this section, making for a more relaxed finish to the route.
