Trail Overview
Strauss South picks up from the northern Strauss camping area and cuts through the trees to the southern Strauss dispersed camping area. This route is noticeably rougher than the trail leading to North Strauss and is generally not the best choice for trailers, although you will find a few out there with good clearance. Expect some off-camber rocky sections, tighter turns, and a loose hill climb. If you're towing, it might be better to consider one of the more western routes to access this area. Once you arrive over the hill at the beach, you'll find trails leading in both directions, north and south, along the lakeside, offering many excellent camping choices. This area is perfect for pulling up a ski boat or houseboat, or having jet skis handy. It's a popular spot, and it's easy to see why, with expansive views of Lake Koocanusa and numerous primitive sites to choose from. There are no services in this area, so be sure to pack it in and pack it out.

Difficulty
A 4x4 vehicle with good clearance is recommended due to the rocky, off-camber sections, tighter corners, and loose hill climb. Not recommended for large trailers. Rougher terrain with rocky sections, tight turns, and a loose hill climb.
History
Strauss South, part of the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area (KMRA), offers access to a beautiful and popular stretch of Lake Koocanusa. This land lies within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa people. The dramatic creation of Lake Koocanusa itself in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as a result of the Libby Dam project, transformed this river valley. This area, once part of the Kootenay River system, now offers expansive lake views and prime water access, making it a highly sought-after destination for modern-day recreation. The KRMA was established to manage and enhance recreational opportunities in the Lake Koocanusa area while protecting natural resources. The KRMA encompasses a large area of Crown land and offers a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and off-roading. The KRMA is managed by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development. It is important to check their website for any closures or restrictions.
