Trail Overview

Covalli North is a straightforward out-and-back trail. The trail is bumpy in spots and shows clear signs of difficult conditions and deep ruts when it's been really wet. It may be impassable during those times. However, it provides an easy route when it's dry to the undeveloped Crown Land camping area at Covalli North. There are a few camp spots where big rigs and fifth wheels can tuck in. With a bit more exploration, you can find spots here and there in the trees and carve out a little campsite for yourself. The trail ends at two larger campsites with views out over the water on Lake Koocanusa. Remember, there are no services, so pack in everything you need and pack out everything you bring. There is no Verizon cell service. To ensure you have consistent map coverage, please download your offline maps before exploring the area. Crown Land Camping: Canadian Crown land is open to Canadian residents for free camping. Out-of-country visitors, particularly from the US, will need to obtain a camping permit from the nearest FrontCounter BC office in Cranbrook before camping on Crown Land if camping outside of the paid campsite.

History

This area lies within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa people. Lake Koocanusa, a dominant feature of the landscape, is a relatively recent creation, formed by the construction of the Libby Dam in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The creation of the lake flooded a significant portion of the Kootenay River valley, transforming the landscape and impacting local communities.
