Trail Overview

Covalli Central begins as a super easy, wide, and graded road with some potholes and cattle grates scattered along the way. The trail winds through the trees and a few meadows before you cross the train tracks and pass through private property. After crossing the train tracks, the trail transitions to a 2-3 difficulty level. The main gravel road goes left, and you continue straight through narrower, sandier, and occasionally rockier sections until you reach the undeveloped camping area. There are a couple of offshoots to official Crown Land camping areas. The first offshoot and the last one are a little more technical to get up and down with some steep sections, mud, and tight turns for larger vehicles. At the end of the road, campsites are scattered here and there. With some short exploration, you can find a nice home for the night tucked into the trees, and if you're lucky, a nice view out to the water. Cell service is limited, with only one bar of usable Verizon and no T-Mobile coverage. To ensure you have consistent map coverage, please download your offline maps before exploring the area. Crown Land Camping: Canadian Crown Land is open to Canadian residents for free camping. Out-of-country visitors, particularly from the US, will need to obtain a camping permit from the nearest FrontCounter BC office in Cranbrook before camping on Crown land if camping outside of the paid campsite.

Difficulty

Midway through, the trail becomes narrower with oncoming traffic needing to find places to pull over or back up. Some sections of the trail are sandy, and there are a lot of mud holes and ruts. This area might be impassable in the early and wet seasons.

History

Covalli Central, situated within the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area, reflects a landscape shaped by both industry and recreation. The presence of train tracks suggests a history of resource extraction or transportation in the area. Today, the area offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The area is also part of the traditional home of the Ktunaxa people. About the Koocanusa Recreation Management Area (KRMA): The KRMA was established to manage and enhance recreational opportunities in the Lake Koocanusa area while protecting natural resources. The KRMA encompasses a large area of Crown land and offers a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and off-roading. The KRMA is managed by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. It is important to check their website for any closures or restrictions.
