Trail Overview

While the road itself may be short, the experience is profoundly rewarding, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in thousands of years of history. Upon reaching the parking lot, a short and gentle hike leads directly to an ancient indigenous petroglyph site, where carvings depict a range of spiritual and symbolic imagery created by the Nuxalk (Bella Coola) people thousands of years ago. Out of respect for local traditions, photography at close proximity is prohibited. This remarkable site is best experienced firsthand to fully appreciate its historical and cultural significance.

Difficulty

This is a standard Forest Service road with trucks running through it each day. It is very well maintained, making it easily accessible even by a low-clearance, 2WD vehicle.

History

The Bella Coola Petroglyphs are significant cultural artifacts of the Nuxalk Nation, who have inhabited this region, known as Kulhulmcilh, since time immemorial. The carvings, etched into granite and sandstone, include depictions of human figures, animals such as frogs and turtles, and spiritual symbols like the Raven. These images have deep cultural meanings, often marking important ceremonial or spiritual sites. Despite historical challenges like colonization and epidemics, the Nuxalk people have actively preserved these petroglyphs and their associated traditions. Today, the site stands as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of their culture.
