Trail Overview

Once a secret playground for local buggy drivers, this trail still carries a hint of its rugged past. It climbs steadily to over 2,200 feet, rewarding you with a panoramic overlook of Cowichan River Provincial Park. The first half serves up narrow, partly washed-out single tracks that twist and dip through the forest, offering just enough technical terrain to keep your attention sharp. As you climb higher, the route opens onto wide forest service roads where you can relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy the final push to the viewpoint.

Difficulty

Overall, the trail is on the easier side, but it isn't without its challenges. A couple of mandatory bypasses, along with the first half's narrow, washed-out creek-bed single track, add just enough technical flavor to keep you on your toes. Drivers should be prepared for uneven surfaces, occasional tight spots, and a bit of careful tire placement.

History

Once known as the Old ArmDong, this route was considered one of the toughest off-road challenges in the Cowichan area. Steep climbs, deep ruts, and unforgiving terrain kept all but the most capable rigs away. In recent years, logging activity has reshaped the landscape, adding new roads and softening the route's bite. What was once a brutal test of driver and machine is now a scenic, approachable trail--still carrying the spirit of its rugged past.
