Trail Overview

This lengthy route skirts the KOFA National Wildlife Refuge's eastern region and can easily be combined with other local trails like Hoodoo Wash or KOFA Pipeline. Overall the terrain isn't too technical, and the scenery is definitely more of an attraction than the obstacles you'll encounter. But, the trail presents challenges that inexperienced drivers shouldn't take too lightly. Along the way, you'll encounter large boulders, sandy/gravel-filled washes, and numerous spots where you'll need to squeeze through brush that isn't friendly to modern automotive paint. There are also a few spots where part of the road is washed out, but there is plenty of room to avoid incident if you're paying attention.

Difficulty

Some sections have large rocks to navigate around... or over. And there are quite a few washes with deep sand/gravel.

Trail rating is generally spot on. Some areas appear to have eroded a bit and require good tire placement. There were a couple climbs I used 4 Low just to make things a little easier. I ran this from south to north for the entire length. It was a rainy day, but the trail was draining pretty well with only a few small puddles. There are amazing views along this trail. Pinstriping is almost a given. Good offroad tires are a must as there are quite a few spots with sharp/fractured rocks. Take your time, keep your eyes open and you may see some the amazing wildlife that calls KOFA home.

A graded dirt/gravel road leads to King Road which starts out pretty much the same with a bit of washboard. It has several rough spots that require higher clearance but most amy stock 4x4’s shouldn’t have any trouble with good tire placement & line choice thru deep ruts. A rocky area requires slow travel & the climb over the pass feels steep & is a bit narrow. I read 8-12% on the grade nothing steeper. Overall it took about 2 hours in to the hoodoo well from the KOFA kiosk. The in out trail felt faster on the way out, perhaps due to a little less site seeing & photo stops.
