Trail Overview
Happy Jack is an 18.3-mile point-to-point trail connecting FS 22 with the Heppner-Spray Highway. A wide gravel road for its entire length, Happy Jack offers stunning views looking north into the Umatilla National Forest. Starting from the east side, the trail crosses Big Wall Creek before climbing 2,000 feet out of a valley and following a high ridgeline to its conclusion. With dozens of places to stop and take in the views, disperse camp, or enjoy lunch, Happy Jack is an excellent trail for those seeking an easy ride through the Umatilla National Forest. Happy Jack is accessible year-round. Note that all OHVs require an Oregon Parks ATV permit.

Difficulty
A well-maintained gravel road, the most intimidating obstacles trail users can expect are washerboarding, occasional steep grades, and a water crossing on the east side that is usually only a couple of inches deep. Weather conditions such as rain and snow can significantly affect trail difficulty. A chainsaw or other equipment for moving fallen trees is highly recommended.
