Trail Overview
Yellowstone North is a scenic desert trail that winds through sandy terrain scattered with small rocks, and offers a blend of geological interest and sweeping views. Early on, the route takes you through a wide wash where sand dominates, leading to a striking rock formation that's a great spot to stop and take in the landscape. After leaving the wash, the trail climbs into a series of steep hills. These ascents and descents are blind in spots, with limited visibility over the crests, and use extreme caution, especially when cresting the top of hills. Several sections require 4-Low for safe navigation, particularly on steeper grades. Once you descend the hill section on the north end of the trail, expect moderate washboarding as the terrain levels out again. The combination of scenery and technical spots makes this a rewarding route for drivers seeking both a visual and off-road experience.

Difficulty
Yellowstone North is best suited for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. While much of the trail consists of manageable sand and light rock, the steep, blind hill climbs and descents--along with the need for 4-Low in key areas--raise the technical difficulty. Inexperienced drivers should proceed with caution, and visibility concerns make spotting or radio communication advisable when traveling in groups.
