Rugged Adventures Episode 10: The Great Donut Safari
With Donut Media
This rugged adventure route takes you over 5,000 miles across the heart of America. Twisting mountain roads, sandy coastlines, the high plains, and much, much more. This route isn’t for the faint of heart or those that are pressed for time. We accomplished our expedition in just under four weeks and we still felt like there was more to see and explore along the way. So, make sure you’ve got some PTO stacked up for this one.
New onX Offroad Route:
The Great Donut Safari
This route begins on the coast of North Carolina and ends on the coast of Oregon. Beware of the many changing climates and conditions that you will encounter along the way. The mud and rain in the South, the high winds and flash flooding of the high plains, the ever changing weather of the Rockies, and the heat of the desert. But, for all those brave explorers that are willing to invest themselves into this journey; just know you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views and experiences in all of America.

A couple of things we learned along the way:
- Keep an eye on the weather. Just the same as most overlanding journeys, but on this one it is even more critical to keep an eye out for weather patterns ahead of you. We kept a vigilant eye on weather that was tracking 2-3 days ahead of us. Also, be mindful of conditions you aren’t familiar with—finding yourself inside a weather pattern you don’t have experience with is one thing you want to avoid.
- Make the most of your time. When you have opportunities—and space—make sure to stock up on food and supplies. Stopping every day or every other day to purchase supplies will make a big impact on the time you have available for this journey. Plan smart and maximize your efforts.
- Air down. Softening up your ride and the impacts it has on your vehicle will make a world of difference during these long stretches.
- Water is essential. This is one major area we could have done better on. I would argue that taking water with you is more important than taking spare fuel tanks with you on this route. I would say that you want at least two gallons of water per person, per day.
Have fun out there and enjoy the journey, it’s an incredible way to see the United States!
