New onX Offroad Route:

Bella Coola Highline

This Rugged Adventure takes you deep into one of British Columbia’s most spectacular and remote regions: Bella Coola. Tucked between dramatic coastal fjords and soaring alpine peaks, the valley is the perfect launching point for an unforgettable off-road journey. The route stretches roughly 243 miles, weaving together three unique trail systems, each delivering its own blend of scenery, challenge, and backcountry rewards.

Your journey begins at the Bella Coola ferry terminal, where you can arrive either by boat from Vancouver Island or by road via the Chilcotin Plateau. From the docks, the route immediately climbs from sea level into rugged coastal mountains. The first trail delivers a quick taste of Bella Coola’s raw beauty—steep switchbacks, sweeping views of the Pacific, and a quiet alpine lake that makes for an incredible first camp. The contrast of ocean and mountain terrain sets the stage for the days ahead.

After soaking in your lakeside morning, you’ll backtrack to the highway and push further inland. Passing through Bella Coola itself, the next trail climbs toward the Purgatory Glacier, where high-alpine views and jagged icefields dominate the skyline. This section is a favorite for its combination of technical driving, dramatic scenery, and the chance to stand beneath one of the area’s most impressive natural features. Camping nearby is possible, but be prepared for rapidly changing weather at elevation.

From here, you’ll once again drop back to pavement before continuing south to the Pantheon Range. The final leg of the trip takes you up to Perkins Peak, a high-country route with vast views over the Chilcotin mountains. This segment offers a satisfying finale: long climbs, remote terrain, and a true sense of being far from civilization. The area has several dispersed camping opportunities, allowing you to soak in alpine sunsets before your descent.

Trip Tips

  • Fuel: Fill up before leaving Bella Coola—services become scarce once you head out on the trails.
  • Navigation: Download Offline Maps in the onX Offroad App; cell service is very limited.
  • Rig Prep: High-clearance 4x4s with recovery gear are strongly recommended. A winch and traction boards are especially useful in wet or snowy conditions.
  • Camping: Be prepared for mixed options—from established campgrounds near town to rugged, dispersed alpine sites.
  • Weather: Conditions can shift quickly, especially at elevation. Pack layers and be prepared for rain, snow, or heat depending on the season.
  • Wildlife: This is grizzly country. Store food properly and stay alert, particularly around camp.
