Cayuse Road

Trail Overview

Cayuse Road is a rugged, double-track dirt route located within the Whiskey Dick trail. There and back at around 2 miles, the trail cuts through exposed, high-desert shrub-steppe with sweeping views of the Columbia River valley. The terrain is characterized by loose rocks, steep off-camber sections, and areas often rutted out by seasonal runoff. Airing down is highly recommended while navigating these rocky obstacles to improve traction and smooth out the ride. To protect wintering and migrating elk herds, the Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area is completely closed to motorized vehicles from February 1st to May 1st every year. Motorized travel is strictly limited to marked "Green Dot" roads. Venturing off-route to blaze a new trail is prohibited to protect the delicate desert ecosystem. Dispersed camping is allowed in the remote backcountry camps within 100 feet of any Green Dot road, making it a great destination for overland setups. A Washington State Discover Pass is required for vehicle access and parking within the wildlife area.
