Trail Overview
Walker Mountain, designated as Forest Road 387, is a seasonally open spur off Clayton Mill Road and is notably more challenging than the main route. The trail is open during three seasonal windows: January 1 through January 10, April 8 through May 13, and October 1 through December 31. The route begins as a maintained gravel road before transitioning to dirt and eventually narrowing into a grassy track as it crosses several open fields along the crest of the mountain ridge. A few dips and drops require adequate ground clearance. During the dry season, multiple mud puddles form along the trail, including one that exceeds 12 inches in depth; a bypass is available for this deeper section. In the wet season, expect significantly more mud, though runoff breaks in the trail help keep conditions manageable. Numerous suitable campsites are found along the route. The open fields on the ridge crest offer ample space and can accommodate very large groups. While the trail doesn't provide dramatic overlooks, it remains a scenic drive through the forest and across the ridge.
