Trail Overview
FS-395/Liberty Trail is an in-and-out trail in Virginia's George Washington National Forest approximately an hour west of Staunton. The trail is seasonally closed, so check with the USFS before planning to go here. Liberty Trail is a narrow dirt trail that turns to mud during and after rainfall. There are a few tiny creek crossings, and in some places, there is the potential for minor pinstriping. Large vehicles will have a harder time on this trail. The USFS has permanently closed the trail at around the halfway point, creating the current "in-and-out" layout of the trail. Despite being out-and-back, Liberty is still a good trail, and due to its seasonal closing, it's a lesser-traveled trail compared to others in the area. Cell service is nearly non-existent throughout the trail, so plan accordingly. There are little-to-no campsites along this trail.

Difficulty
In dry conditions, this trail presents little challenge. When wet, the trail surface becomes slick with black mud and ruts can form.
