Trail Overview
Upper Levi Well is a short but rewarding alternative to the main Levi Well Road, offering a more scenic and adventurous line through open ranchland and colorful desert terrain. The route is generally easy, but several mild obstacles keep it interesting for stock-type 4x4s with decent clearance. Drivers will encounter soft sand, off-camber climbs, and occasional washouts that can require careful tire placement and use of 4WD. One of the standout features is a narrow sandy ledge that drops into a creek crossing where water can pool year-round. Near the end, the trail delivers its most memorable challenge: descending a sandy wall, crossing a rock slab, and climbing back out another sandy bank to reconnect with Levi Well Road. Dry conditions are important, as wet ground can quickly become impassable. Primitive camping opportunities are plentiful, and livestock may be present along the route.

Difficulty
Upper Levi Well is a mostly mild route best suited for stock high-clearance 4x4 vehicles in dry conditions. The main challenges come from soft sand, off-camber sections, minor washouts, and the final sandy wall/rock slab crossing. 4WD is recommended for traction, especially after loose or churned-up conditions. Avoid the trail when wet, as mud and clay can make even easy terrain difficult or impassable.
History
The Levi Well area reflects Moab's long history of ranching, water access routes, and backcountry travel. Many roads in this region began as utility, livestock, or access tracks long before they became recreation routes used by modern overlanders and off-road travelers.
