Elephant Hill Road

Elephant Hill Road is an iconic, highly demanding route in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, offering experienced offroaders a thrilling challenge amid stunning sandstone formations. The trail begins immediately at the Squaw Flat parking lot trailhead and wastes no time ascending steep, rugged terrain. Spanning approximately 1.9 miles with an elevation ranging from 5,052 feet to 5,180 feet, this technical stretch features a series of tight, single-lane switchbacks carved directly into the rock. Drivers must navigate these sharp bends with precision, particularly the final switchback, which is too tight for most vehicles to clear in a single turn and requires a multi-point turn utilizing a designated backup pocket. The surface consists primarily of slickrock and loose dirt, with large rock shelves and ledges waiting at the top of the switchbacks. While spotters are not strictly mandatory, they are highly recommended to guide vehicles over these off-camber obstacles and ledge climbs. Because this route is located within Canyonlands National Park, all vehicles must be street-legal four-wheel-drive units with high clearance and a low-range transfer case; off-highway vehicles (OHVs, ATVs, and UTVs) are strictly prohibited. A day-use permit from the National Park Service is required to drive this road, and permits are limited to protect the fragile desert environment.
