Trail Overview

Seven Crossing Trail is a scenic backcountry route in the Dixie National Forest, offering a peaceful blend of forested hills, meadows, and seasonal stream crossings. This route winds through cedar forests and gently rolling terrain, with a soft base of sandy dirt and scattered rocks under the tire. The trail's highlight--and namesake--is its seven creek crossings. Most are mild, but one features a steep entry/exit that may challenge lower-clearance or long wheelbase rigs, especially after rain or snowmelt. The trail also includes uneven terrain and mild elevation changes as it moves between meadows and forested ridges. It's a beautiful remote track, perfect for a quiet ride with enough technical interest to keep things fun. Please be aware that fences mark private land.

Difficulty

While most of the trail stays within the easy 1 to 2 range--thanks to sandy dirt, gradual hills, and light rock--the creek crossings add a layer of variability. During dry conditions, high-clearance 2WD or AWD vehicles may manage most of the trail, but 4WD is strongly recommended, especially for the steeper crossing and uneven terrain. The trail's difficulty can increase significantly with recent precipitation or snow runoff, pushing parts of it into a solid 3 rating. Always check weather and water levels before heading in.

History

Old Irontown, Old Iron Town, or Irontown, originally Iron City, is an unincorporated community and near-ghost town in Iron County, Utah, United States.[2] It is located in Dixie National Forest, approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Cedar City. The settlement was founded in 1868 as a second attempt to mine iron from Iron Mountain after a disappointing yield from Cedar City. The colony lasted until 1876, when strife from the Edmunds-Tucker Act and the Panic of 1873 forced its closure. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
