Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This scenic rim route follows along the edge of the Little Hole area, offering expansive views down into the carved canyon below and across the surrounding San Rafael Swell. The trail consists mostly of a firm dirt and light gravel surface, making for an easy and enjoyable drive in dry conditions. As the route winds along the rim, it alternates between open stretches and sections that hug the canyon's edge, giving you a constant sense of exposure and scenery. One notable obstacle comes at a narrow section near a washout, where the width of the vehicle and proper tire placement become important to safely navigate through. Aside from that feature, the road remains relatively straightforward, making it a great option for those looking to enjoy big views without tackling highly technical terrain.

Difficulty

This route is mostly an easy dirt and gravel road with minimal obstacles, suitable for most high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The only real challenge is a narrow section near a washout where careful tire placement is required, especially with the exposure along the rim.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
