Trail Overview

Echo Lake Trail is an exciting trail that will take you to a beautiful high alpine lake under the shadow of 11,217-foot Murdock Mountain in the High Uinta Wilderness. This trail is not too challenging at the beginning, with a few rock ledges going with the direction of the trail and some larger boulders that will have to be navigated around. At the end of the road, though, is where this trail's real rating comes out. You will drop down into a little bowl, hiding the beautiful Echo Lake. On this final descent, many may lift a tier on this rutted down climb, and then will have to carefully maneuver through some tight turns. The last section before the lake is an 18-inch deep water crossing on an angled slope, where half the car will be deep in the water and the other half will be dry as can be, but don't worry, it is very unlikely to tip or flood your car. Now that you have arrived at the lake, you will be treated to a beautiful view and an amazing camp spot, but you're not out of the woods yet. On your way back, the steep rutted hill down will have to be taken up, likely needing 4low and a fairly large lift or A-Trac and a back locker.

Difficulty

This trail features boulders and rock ledges that require careful navigation, often on uneven or off-camber surfaces. Expect steep, rutted climbs and descents where four-wheel drive low, a lift, or traction aids and lockers may be needed. Tight tree sections are common, and water crossings can reach around 18 inches in the fall, with potential for greater depth during spring runoff or heavy storms.
