Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This short connector route runs approximately 2.5 miles from Pinnacle Point to Cane Wash, offering an easy but scenic drive through the San Rafael Swell. The trail is an unmaintained dirt road with a mix of firm ground, occasional sandy patches, and several small wash crossings that can change with the weather. While there are no major technical obstacles, the road features frequent whoops and shallow washouts that create a rough, bouncy ride, and make high clearance strongly recommended. The route travels mostly straight through, providing consistent views of the surrounding Sid's Mountain Wilderness area and the rugged terrain that defines this part of the Swell. A few designated campsites are scattered along the way, though options are somewhat limited compared to nearby areas. At the Cane Wash end, the trail provides access to additional camping opportunities as well as a small hiking trailhead just across the wash, making it a useful connector with a bit of scenery and exploration built in.

Difficulty

This route is generally easy with no major obstacles, but the unmaintained surface, frequent whoops, and multiple washouts add enough roughness to raise it above a simple graded road. High-clearance vehicles are recommended to handle the uneven terrain comfortably. In dry conditions, most stock 4WD vehicles will have no issues, but the ride can be bumpy and requires attention to speed and line choice. Wet weather may increase difficulty due to softer ground and changing wash conditions.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
