Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Calf Canyon Overlook is a short, easy route that leads to some of the most impressive views in this part of the San Rafael Swell. The trail begins as a maintained road off Green River Cutoff, making for a smooth and straightforward start. After reaching the first overlook, the road transitions into a lightly maintained dirt track, but it remains very easy to follow and travel in dry conditions. As you continue, the trail narrows significantly with trees crowding both sides, making pinstriping very likely, especially for wider or longer wheelbase vehicles. The route is not one to rush, as tighter sections and limited visibility around corners require slower speeds. Along the way, glimpses of the Sid's Mountain area and surrounding canyon landscapes begin to open up, building toward the final overlook. The second overlook provides a dramatic view into Buckhorn Wash and Calf Canyon, often referred to as the "Little Grand Canyon." Numerous camping options are scattered throughout the area, making this a great destination for both quick visits and overnight stays.

Difficulty
This route is generally very easy, with a maintained start and a lightly maintained dirt road the rest of the way. There are no significant obstacles, making it suitable for most high clearance SUVs and 4WD vehicles in dry conditions. The primary challenge is the narrow trail lined with trees, where pinstriping is highly likely, and passing can be difficult.
History
The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
