Trail Overview

BLM 43 is a highly scenic, little-used 3.6-mile backcountry two-track that serves as a vital, rugged connection between the BLM 42 trail and the main highway. This deeply secluded, vividly colored red-sand path playfully meanders through a dense high-desert landscape heavily populated by mature green juniper trees and thick, encroaching sagebrush under a brilliant blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. Because the designated driving corridor sees very little regular traffic, off-road explorers can expect a wonderfully quiet, immersive journey deeply into the brush. Along the distinctly winding transit, travelers will safely encounter a sturdy metal range gate spanning the sandy track, which must be respectfully opened and securely closed behind you to properly maintain the local grazing boundaries. The highly engaging drive gracefully rolls over the undulating terrain, offering sweeping views of the surrounding hills before ultimately transitioning travelers back toward civilization.

Difficulty

BLM 43 confidently earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating, driven entirely by its distinctly demanding surface conditions. The 3.6-mile route features several portions composed of exceptionally deep, power-sapping sand combined with a couple of distinctly punchy, steep hill climbs. To successfully negotiate these heavily rutted inclines without helplessly bogging down, a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with a locking differential is absolutely mandatory. Furthermore, drastically dropping your tire air pressures before hitting the trail is strictly necessary to maximize your essential flotation and maintain forward momentum. Finally, because the remarkably narrow driving corridor constantly forces vehicles to push tightly through overgrown sagebrush and rigid junipers, heavy cosmetic pinstriping along the side panels is a guarantee for any rig making the transit.
