Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Big Hole Wash continues the San Rafael Swell adventure with a short but engaging 5-mile crossover that blends easy travel with a few moderate challenges. The trail surface varies between sandy stretches, rocky patches, and sections marked by numerous deep washouts that require careful tire placement. One loose dirt hill adds a bit of difficulty, especially in wet conditions, but remains manageable for most stock 4x4 vehicles. As the route winds through the landscape, you'll encounter tighter sections where you may need to weave between trees, along with open views of the surrounding mountains that make the drive worthwhile. Several larger dispersed campsites with established rock fire rings are located along the trail, offering great spots to stop for the night. Near the eastern end, a unique historical feature stands out, an old stone culvert believed to be from the Spirit Railroad. While the surrounding ground has eroded away over time, the sandstone structure remains intact, creating an interesting and somewhat unexpected landmark. Overall, Big Hole Wash is a great choice for beginners looking to step up from easy trails without committing to anything overly technical.

Difficulty
This trail is suitable for most stock high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, with mild challenges including deep washouts, a loose dirt hill, and occasional rocky sections. Careful tire placement is needed in eroded areas; lockers may be helpful for some, but there are no major technical obstacles. A good option for beginners looking to progress beyond easy trails.
History
The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
