Trail Overview

Alvies Bench cuts through a shady aspen and pine forest. There is little camping right off the trail. However, an unnamed spur trail on the east side of Alvies Bench will head north and may have some available primitive camping. At the time of this writing, there is no cell service in the area - even with a signal booster. So that you know, some Forest Service maps will show a split on the east side of the trail where Alvies Bench meets up with Racetrack Cutoff. However, there is no actual split in the trail, and the actual trail will follow the southern half of the split that needs to be correctly marked on those maps.

Narrow dirt road with very few places to pass or turn around. There are some deep potholes and ruts along the trail. There are also large trees protruding into the trail which may make this difficult to access with some wider vehicles.

Access Description

According to US Forest Service road maps, Alvies Bench is the middle trail in a series of three that provide access to two other more major forest roads, Coop Cr on the west and Racetrack on the east. However, on the ground you will not see any transition from Alvies Bench to Racetrack. In fact, if you're trying to access this trail from the east, you will need to start looking for this trail from Racetrack. There is a marker pole at the split on Racetrack (FR 70514) identifying Forest Road 70192 (Alvies Bench) to the right instead of Forest Road 70203 (Racetrack Cutoff). For more information, view the trail information for Racetrack Cutoff (FR 70203).
