Trail Overview

An amazing drive on the outskirts of the Upland Island Wilderness Area with an incredible amount of dispersed camp sites waiting to be explored. This area is also one of the most plentiful hunting lands here in East Texas as well. With gravel road sections and mud rut sections, this trail offers a wonderful testing ground for any rig to be able to switch from pleasant sight-seeing mode to technical driving mode. Keep recovery equipment handy.

Difficulty

This trail gives the opportunity to see how slick yet sticky East Texas red dirt can get when it's wet. There are a few spots pictured here that are bowl shaped formations in the road that hold and stir the red dirt into a soup that can be both fun to drive in, and scary depending on your level of preparedness. Heavier rigs should proceed with some extreme caution during the rain seasons, but in general, be careful on this trail no matter the time of year, because there are a few creeks and streams that feed the mud on this trail.

History

The Boulware section of this trail was incepted as a boundary road as well as a management road for access to the Upland Island Wilderness. However, the 3070 (a.k.a. Rock Crusher) portion of the trail was used as a rough easement for prospective well workers/mill workers in the late 1800s and early 1900s just outside of Zavalla.
