Trail Overview
Lake Bryson Road is a public road giving access to Lake Bryson. The dirt starts as soon as you turn off the pavement in the town of Bryson. Lake Bryson Road is hardly maintained. You will experience small rocks sticking up through the caliche road base. You will quickly run into the gatekeeper obstacle. There is about a 100-yard stretch of road that is deep mud (1-2' in depth). Once you are through the mud, there is a steep hill climb with ruts and rocks. Be prepared for deep mud holes, lots of standing water, and rock crawling. The boat ramp is the next location you come to. Texas Parks and Wildlife states that anglers launching a boat should have 4-wheel drive. This is not a joke. The boat ramp is much rougher than 99% of Texas's dirt roads. Once you leave the boat ramp, turning left to continue the trail, you will experience a fairly severe rock garden and lots of standing water. There is an overhanging tree roughly 1.5' in width crossing the trail, preventing vehicles with a 6-inch lift or vehicles with racks and gear on said rack from passing through. With each turn as you travel deeper into this trail, you will find 50-yard-plus deep water crossings and mud holes that swallow vehicles whole. About halfway through the trail, there is an abandoned modern Hyundai Tucson. Here are a few considerations for this trail, having now completed the trail down and back. 1. High Clearance is a must. 2. If the trail is at all wet, you must have a very aggressive mud terrain, and that may not be enough. 3. Bring all recovery gear. Be prepared for self-recovery. While there are several obstacles that you could recover with a partner vehicle, the mud holes are tight and really will require self-recovery. 4. Bring tree removal tools. 5. Prepare to air down 6. Be prepared for mud with no way to bypass. 7. Be prepared for trail damage. This trail is tight, lots of rocks, lots of DEEP mud, and water with hidden logs, tires, and rocks. 8. Choose your lines wisely.
