Trail Overview

This short 0.7-mile trail is an offshoot of Bulldog Trail, quick, and easily accessible from Vanocker Canyon. Upon leaving the highway, you will be presented with two choices. The left trail is Veterans Peak. This is a narrow trail that has a few pull-off locations for oncoming traffic but you'll want to pay attention, especially in larger groups. There is parking at the top to take in the amazing views, which include Bear Butte and as far away as Terry Peak Ski Resort. The trail is rocky with a few washed-out areas that may take you a bit off-camber. It is worth the short drive up to the top.

Difficulty

This trail can have some pretty washed-out areas, especially in the spring. They may make you a bit off-camber, but there is nothing exceptionally difficult. Many loose rocks including some large ones may be possible. The climb to the top is not particularly steep in any one spot but it is a nice climb. The trail is narrow in a few spots but does have locations to allow oncoming traffic to bypass you.

History

Once the site of a northern Black Hills fire lookout tower, Veterans Peak now serves the area as a site for radio communications.
