Trail Overview
Smith Draw is a solid choice for intermediate drivers looking to explore a quieter corner of the Black Hills with a mix of forested terrain and lightly technical road conditions. Running between Six Mile Road (FS 301) and Gillette Canyon Road (FS 296) through the Mystic Ranger District, this route follows Forest Service Roads 383 and 6057 and offers a moderate 4x4 experience defined by native soil, embedded rock, and variable maintenance. Expect a combination of compact dirt and gravel with intermittent rocky patches and rutted segments, especially after storms. While not extreme, the trail demands a high-clearance vehicle with 4WD for confidence through uneven stretches and mild erosion zones, making it a good fit for drivers who have outgrown easy 4x4 trails in South Dakota but aren't seeking technical rock crawling. The route gradually transitions through rolling forested terrain with minor elevation changes, offering a remote feel without committing to a long or highly technical backcountry push. Mileage is moderate for a connector-style trail, and while most of the route is straightforward, narrow sections and limited turnaround points require planning, especially for larger rigs or when towing. Seasonal conditions play a major role in trail difficulty; wet weather can quickly turn clay-heavy sections into slick mud, while winter snow may limit access or require recovery gear. As with many Black Hills National Forest routes, downed trees and debris are possible, and users should expect shared traffic from other OHVs, including ATVs, SxS, and dirt bikes. Navigation is typically straightforward using Forest Service signage and an offline map, but verifying current conditions with the Mystic Ranger District is recommended before heading out.
