Trail Overview
Champaign Hill Road is one of those mellow ridge cruisers that feels like it was made for a slow roll with the windows down. It winds up and over the broad spine of Champaign Hill, offering long, open views and easy grades the whole way. The road is well-maintained gravel -- wide enough for passing, with good drainage and minimal rutting -- and it's perfect if you're running solo, towing a trailer, or just looking to connect deeper into the hills without bouncing your rig to pieces. This stretch has solid backcountry vibes without much effort. Pine thins out at the top, giving way to patches of meadow and granite outcrops where elk tend to bed down and turkeys love to strut. A few small pull-offs and grassy flats along the way work well for dispersed camping, especially up high where the stars come out strong and the breeze stays cool. Not technical, not busy, just a smooth ride through a beautiful stretch of country. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.
