Trail Overview

Upside is a moderately easy SxS trail for vehicles 65 inches or less in the Mount Emily Recreation Area that winds along the north edge of the recreation area for 1.6 miles. The majority of the trail is easy, but it has some steeper terrain compared to the rest of the SxS trails in the area. There are a couple of switchbacks in the beginning on the west side. They are tighter and steeper than the rest of the trail, adding to the technical element, but they are smooth and should still be approachable for less experienced riders. There is a little bit of a shelfy, narrow trail after the switchbacks as the trail keeps climbing. After about a mile, the grade mellows out, and it winds gradually through the forest of mossy pines, with intermittent embedded rocks or roots in the trail. After it crosses a road, you get a really nice view overlooking the rural valley below, and the Wallowa Mountains, and the trail becomes shelfy again in this section. The trail drops down to Mount Emily Road, where there is also a nice overlook spot.

Difficulty

This trail is rated by the land managers as Most Difficult within the trail system, due to the steeper terrain and couple switchbacks, but it is still overall pretty easy because there are no major rock obstacles, and the trail remains rather smooth. Expect narrower terrain and shelfy sections.

There is a large staging area and campground at the south end of the trail system. This trail system accesses several SxS trails for vehicles 65 inches or less, plus single-track and 4x4 trails, allows two-way traffic, and is well-marked and family-friendly.
