Trail Overview
Mainline is a 4.8-mile point-to-point trail that provides access to many other routes within the park. The trail can be moderately steep in places, with loose rock, embedded rock, and several heavily rutted sections throughout. Views of La Grande and the Wallowa Mountains open up in the upper portions of the trail. An Oregon State ATV operating permit is required for all vehicles within the Mount Emily Recreation Area. The trail is open year-round; however, management requests that trails not be used when mud sticks to tires.

Difficulty
Mainline is moderately challenging due to its steep grades, loose rock, and heavily rutted sections. Low-clearance vehicles are not recommended, particularly in the rougher upper portions of the trail, where ruts and embedded rock can make line choice more important. Traction can become inconsistent on climbs where loose rock has accumulated. The trail also serves as a primary connector to many other routes in the park, so riders should expect occasional traffic at intersections. Conditions become significantly more difficult when wet, and riders should avoid using the trail when mud sticks to tires.
