Trail Overview

Nestled just east of the bustling Sand Lake OHV Recreation Area, the Bohom forest service road offers a tranquil, secluded escape into the lush canopy of the Oregon Coast Range. Branching directly off the central spine of Bun Creek road as it climbs the flanks of Buzzard Butte, this short 0.9-mile spur network is a hidden gem for overlanders seeking solitude. The route winds through dense, moss-draped corridors of towering Douglas firs and scattered alder, passing by occasional older harvest zones characterized by lingering slash piles. What makes Bohom truly special is its collection of quiet, primitive dispersed campsites tucked neatly into the timber. Several of these coveted clearings reward explorers with breathtaking, peekaboo views through the evergreen canopy down to the Pacific Ocean--making it an absolutely prime location to park the rig, deploy the awning, and watch a spectacular coastal sunset far away from the crowds at Sand Lake.

While this trail does not require advanced technical rock-crawling skills or mandatory 4WD in dry conditions, it earns a solid rating of 2 due to its undulating, unmaintained surface. The tread consists of rough, crushed gravel mixed with soft coastal dirt. More importantly, the trail features pronounced water bars--large earthen drainage mounds cut laterally across the track--that will aggressively test your vehicle's suspension and clearance if taken too fast. These physical speed bumps mandate a slow, deliberate pace. High clearance is recommended to comfortably navigate these dips without risking undercarriage damage or scraping your bumpers.
