Trail Overview

The Alvord Desert playa is a vast, flat expanse of a dried lake bed, offering a unique and serene landscape. The playa's hard, cracked surface creates an almost otherworldly experience, perfect for off-road adventures and photography. However, visitors should remain vigilant for mud holes, which can be deceptively treacherous and challenging to escape without proper recovery equipment. Scattered across the edges of the playa are patches of hardy bushes and shrubs, requiring some navigation and route finding but generally posing no significant obstacles. This remote and expansive desert setting promises an unforgettable experience for those seeking solitude and wide-open spaces. It's a very easy and fun area to explore.

Difficulty

This is a flat, dried lake bed. Watch out for mud holes that could be a sticky situation with nothing to recover off of. There are bushes and shrubs to navigate around, but nothing crazy.

With live tracking on the app, I was able to drive directly to the trail from the playa. The entrance was a little difficult to see from the beginning as the brush blended in with all the other brush around. Once on the trail, you knew you were on the trail. The trail was a mix of drier, gravel, lava rock, and soft dirt. The trail was relatively flat with some small hills. Worth the drive for anyone wanting to add an easy trail to their Alvord experience. Saw a jackrabbit and a small lizard on the trail too!

I started within the Alford desert and weaved between mounds and brush to get where the trail appeared to be but there was no trail at all. I couldn’t go further and turned around.
