Unit Management Road

Trail Overview

This is a well-maintained gravel route that runs from the north end of the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge Management Unit to the south end. The road is consistently graded but can become washed out quickly during heavy rain due to the large number of small lakes and rivers that run through the refuge. This can also create water crossings up to 10 inches or more in certain areas, so it's important to avoid any water crossings, as there are large drop-offs on either side of the road. The area has abundant wildlife and multiple access points to the small lakes and rivers for fishing, kayaking, and small boats. There are several primitive campsites right off the main route, offering plenty of privacy, but access to trash disposal and water is limited. Both Madill and Tishomingo are nearby, and both have multiple gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. This area is also used for seasonal public hunting, so be sure to check the U.S. Fish and Wildlife website for more information about hunting seasons.

Difficulty

Low clearance vehicles and 2WD vehicles can have difficulty getting in and out of the camping sites due to inclines and loose gravel surface. The main route is fine for most vehicles except for those with low clearance.
