Trail Overview
Lyra Trail is a solid pick for ATV and dirtbike riders looking for a moderate challenge deep in the Ironton Ranger District of Wayne National Forest. Twisting through southeastern Ohio's wooded hills, this narrow forest route delivers a mix of rutted dirt, rocky patches, and the occasional muddy washout--perfect for riders who like to keep things interesting without stepping into extreme terrain. The trail starts off Howard Furnace Road and winds north through dense forest, eventually connecting with the Telegraph and Wolcott routes. Its natural earth surface can get slick and eroded after a rain, with shallow water crossings and loose rock adding to the technical feel. Lyra Trail demands steady throttle control and good line choices, especially on steeper grades or after seasonal weather has chewed up the surface. As with all Wayne NF OHV routes, only ATVs and dirtbikes are allowed, and only where trails are signed open on the current MVUM. Weather-related closures are common in winter or after heavy storms, so always double-check seasonal orders from the Ironton District before heading out. Cell service is spotty at best, so download maps ahead of time. If you're riding after a storm, pack a tow strap--you're more likely to help a buddy out of a mudhole than find a signal to call for help.
