Trail Overview
Copperhead Trail (FS 22) in Wayne National Forest's Ironton Ranger District offers a moderately challenging ride tailored for ATVs and dirtbikes looking to explore tight, technical terrain with natural obstacles. This single-track motorized trail winds south and east from Hanging Rock Loop toward High Knob Loop, serving up a mix of narrow dirt paths, loose rock, and erosion-prone sections that demand focused riding. Open from April 15 through December 15, Copperhead Trail is especially known for its tight switchbacks, muddy ruts, and water crossings that test both traction and handling. Wet weather can quickly turn the trail slick, and riders should stay alert for downed trees or washouts after storms. While full-size 4x4s aren't permitted, the trail still offers plenty of off-camber stretches and moderate climbs to keep smaller rigs engaged. Riders should also be prepared for blind corners and limited passing zones, especially in overgrown sections. Local tip: After heavy use or storms, some of the rutted hills on Copperhead develop deep washouts. Ride with a spotter if you're unfamiliar with the trail, and always walk the line before committing to a sketchy descent.

Difficulty
The hill climbs/descents are steep with blind turns and switchbacks. They are rutted and off camber. There is always a chance of downed trees on the trail. At the north east end of the trail, the Forest Service has installed matting on a steep climb/descent depending on the direction of travel that can be treacherous when wet.
