Trail Overview

Long Arm is a varied trail that transitions from an easy gravel road into a more challenging off-road experience, making it important to understand the entry direction before starting. When entering from Buzzard Roost Road, the trail begins as a well-graded gravel drive that feels consistent with a Level 1 road. Midway through the route, the terrain changes significantly, transitioning into a narrower, more technical section that defines the overall experience. This portion of the trail includes deep mud holes, large washout sections, and rocky terrain, often combined with downhill grades that can make traction and vehicle control more difficult. Off-camber sections created by erosion add another layer of complexity, requiring careful line choice and steady throttle input. When approaching from the opposite direction via Cataloochee Turnpike to Big Creek Trail, drivers will encounter the more difficult terrain first while climbing, followed by the easier gravel section toward the end. The full route stretches just over 5.3 miles and typically takes more than half an hour to complete, depending on conditions and driver experience. The changing terrain and extended length make this a more engaging drive than nearby routes. Drivers should remain on the designated trail and use caution in wet conditions, as mud and erosion can worsen quickly.

Difficulty

Long Arm is rated a 3 due to its uneven, rutted terrain with loose rock, mud, and significant erosion features that create sustained difficulty through portions of the trail. The midsection includes deep mud holes and large washouts that introduce off-camber driving and require careful tire placement. These features align with a rutted dirt trail where obstacles up to approximately 12 inches, uneven surfaces, and traction challenges are present. While part of the trail is a well-maintained gravel road, the rating is based on the sustained difficulty of the more technical section. The combination of mud, erosion, and rocky terrain--particularly when traveling downhill--elevates the overall experience above an easy route. Entering from Cataloochee Turnpike places drivers immediately into the more difficult section, which may be preferable for those wanting to tackle obstacles uphill. 4WD and adequate ground clearance are recommended to navigate the more challenging portions of the trail under normal conditions.
