Trail Overview

Malquadis Point is a great route that begins as an oil road turn-off from RT 64, just east of Manzanares Canyon. The trail starts with a steady climb to the top of the mesa before leveling out into a stretch of desert prairie where the trail can be heavily rutted, depending on recent weather and traffic. While that initial terrain is fairly flat and unremarkable as it loops in front of Baltazar Peak, shortly thereafter the landscape becomes more dynamic with clusters of juniper and pinion trees, as well as unique sandstone rock formations. As the trail completes the 325 foot ascent to Malquadis Point, the scenery opens up to breathtaking views of the San Juan River and the surrounding mesas. Along this section, expect areas of shelving of up to 12-inches as well as some stretches of bare sandstone. There are plenty of opportunities to explore additional offshoots and side trails, offering a chance to experience even more of the rugged landscape. Look out for animals both domestic and wild: deer, cattle, and coyote signs are apparent along the way. The difficulty of this trail will vary greatly depending on weather, precipitation, and previous recent traffic.

Difficulty

The rutting combined with some of the shelving encountered along a few stretches of this trail merit it's rating as a 3, otherwise the majority of the trail would be classified as an easy 2.
