Trail Overview

Hubbell Canyon Trail is a 4.8-mile-long trail through the Lincoln National Forest. The north end starts off ATV Trail 9278, along a fence line in a pasture where the trail was muddy and rutted, and still had some snow in early spring. There are roots stretched across the trail, which is slightly off-camber and rutted in the beginning. As it follows the fence line, it becomes covered in a light layer of loose rocks, but it is generally less rocky than some of the surrounding trails. The trail traverses across the grassy hillside next to pines and fir trees, on a gradual slope, and remains decently wide throughout the whole route. Near the south end, it goes through a cattle gate and becomes bonier with more embedded chunky rock packed down into the trail. The trail had several large trees down blocking the trail from a recent windstorm (in early spring) that will need to be cut for ATVs to get through; however, it looks like this trail system is generally well-maintained and highly trafficked, and any logs will typically get cleared for the season.

Difficulty

The difficulty rating is based on whether the trail was cleared of the major logs that were present at the time, which is likely, as this trail system is highly maintained and well-trafficked. When clear of logs, the trail is overall easy as it maintains a gradual grade, with significantly fewer rocks than some of the surrounding trails. It does have a few roots and ruts to watch out for.
