Trail Overview

The north end of Trail 5006 departs from a high clearance road (Benson Ridge South) and starts descending through a forest of pines and firs. The trail is wide and well-trafficked, covered in a chunky layer of loose golf ball sized rock. It passes the intersections with ATV trails 5007C and 5005A in wide open meadows. All intersections are well signed, making it easy to get around out here. The rock layer gets heavier throughout the trail as it goes south, with bigger chunkier rocks. They are mostly packed down into the loamy soil, so they aren't too difficult to ride over, but the loose baby heads will still ping you around. The trail looked cleared of logs by early spring; however, there was a recent wind storm that had blown some smaller trees and branches into the trail that hadn't been cleared yet. Watch out for shallow ruts and roots across the trail. There was one small series of rock ledges that were about a foot tall, but there was an easier bypass around it. The trail keeps descending, on a mostly gradual slope, curving through the trees, until it ends at an intersection with FS 5597, which takes you down to the Bluff Springs Parking Lot.

Difficulty

This is a moderate ATV trail due to a consistent layer of loose rocks and one smaller ledge obstacle. There are roots and ruts, and potential for lots of logs, especially in early season; however, it looks well trafficked and maintained enough that logs will likely get cut for the season.
